ACTIVITY: go back to high school
Partner with a local high school Vo-tech or automotive shop class to have the students come out to check employee tire pressure, tread-wear, condition of oil and air filter and provide an inspection report to employees as they drive in on a designated morning. The students would not be making any repairs, rather would indicate if follow-up maintenance were required. Following a regular maintenance schedule as determined by the vehicle’s manufacturer can improve fuel economy by as much as 10% according to the EPA.
To recognize the work of the students and the school, consider purchasing and donating to the school a quantity of the NETS Novice Driver’s Road Map—a booklet for parents to help their new drivers get the guided practice they need before hitting the road on their own. NETS offers substantial discounts on volume orders. Providing this valuable resource to the school as an in-kind donation would be a great community-relations opportunity. We’ve included a press release template so you can let your local media know about your partnership.
This socially responsible activity is good for the environment of your local community, and will help your employees conserve fuel while making them aware of any tire or other maintenance issues affecting their vehicles. In addition, your company will be helping new drivers get the practice they need to build their driving skills. Remember— they’re out there sharing the road with all of your employees!
