NETS is a collaborative group of employer road safety professionals whose objective is to advance road safety for employees, their family members, and the communities in which they live and work. Our membership comprises global traffic safety leaders from both private industry and government, whose fleets range from fewer than 100 vehicles to those with more than 50,000.

Role Overview

NETS is seeking a Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) to help guide the organization through a pivotal period of growth and evolution. This is a senior leadership role focused on shaping long-term strategy, expanding impact, and positioning NETS for sustained influence and financial health within a changing national and global road safety landscape.

This is a fully remote position, with occasional travel required for board meetings, conferences, and key events.

The CSO will work closely with the Board of Directors and staff to identify and guide execution on growth opportunities, strengthen core programs, and advance partnerships that support NETS’ mission. This role emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and measurable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop and Lead Organizational Strategy
  • Lead the development of NETS’ long-term strategic direction in collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff
  • Translate the organization’s mission into clear priorities, strategic goals, and performance indicators
  • Support strategic planning, progress tracking, and reporting for the Board
  1. Drive Road Safety & Transportation Initiatives
  • Provide strategic guidance across NETS’ road safety, education, research, and advocacy initiatives
  • Ensure programs remain aligned with industry needs, emerging risks, and evolving best practices
  • Monitor trends in fleet safety, transportation, and road safety to inform organizational direction
  1. Build Strategic Partnerships
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with fleets, insurance carriers, vendors, government agencies, and peer organizations
  • Support collaborations, sponsorships, and multi-stakeholder initiatives that advance NETS’ mission
  • Enhance NETS’ visibility, influence, and leadership within the road safety ecosystem
  1. Support Growth, Funding & Member Value
  • Partner with staff and Board leadership to advance membership growth and retention strategies
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial sustainability through partnerships, programs, grants, or other aligned funding sources
  • Help ensure NETS delivers clear, compelling value to members and stakeholders
  1. Guide Innovation & Program Evolution
  • Evaluate existing programs and offerings for strategic alignment, impact, and sustainability
  • Recommend enhancements, new initiatives, or program sunsetting as appropriate
  • Support thoughtful adoption of data, research, and technology to modernize offerings
  1. Advise the Board
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Board of Directors on strategy and organizational direction
  • Support long-range planning, annual reporting, and performance dashboards
  • Help inform Board decision-making related to growth, investment, and resource allocation
  • Establish committees and reporting structures for executing priorities.

 

Initial Priorities (First 90–120 Days)

During the first 90–120 days, the Chief Strategy Officer will focus on:

  • Conducting an assessment of NETS’ current governance structure, initiatives, partnerships, membership, programs, and growth opportunities
  • Partnering with the Board of Directors and staff to define a clear strategic direction and a prioritized roadmap
  • Identifying near-term opportunities to strengthen Board composition and engagement
  • Evaluating the NETS Strength IN Numbers® Fleet Safety Benchmark Program and its role in supporting growth and member value
  • Recommending strategies to support membership growth, organizational sustainability, and long-term impact

 

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • 7+ years of senior-level leadership experience in strategy, operations, sustainability, safety, risk, or related functions within the private sector, nonprofit, association, or comparable mission-driven organization
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and advance organizational strategy and guide change over time
  • Experience working collaboratively with a Board of Directors
  • Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders across sectors
  • Excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to lead through influence
  • Sustained superior performance with quantifiable results in prior roles, such that third-party objective quality evidence can be provided to the Board

Preferred

  • Experience in transportation safety, fleet management, risk management, insurance, mobility, or a related field
  • Experience supporting membership-based organizations or industry associations
  • Exposure to international or global programs, partnerships, or stakeholders
  • Familiarity with regulatory, safety, or policy environments related to road safety (U.S. or international)
  • Experience contributing to organizational growth initiatives, such as expanding programs, membership, partnerships, or funding sources

International Perspective

Experience working with international stakeholders or global initiatives is valued. Candidates should bring a global mindset, cultural awareness, and a willingness to learn and adapt to varying regional needs in road safety and fleet operations.

Compensation

This role offers a competitive base salary of $180,000 plus a benefits package of medical, dental, vision, 403(b), and PTO, with the opportunity for performance-based incentives aligned with organizational growth and strategic objectives.
