NETS Releases Significant Update to Post-Incident Coaching Toolkit: New Focus on Driver Behavior and Root-Cause Analysis
VIENNA, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) has released a significant update to its Post-Incident Coaching Toolkit, adding a new driver-behavior and systems-based component to help managers get to the root cause of vehicle collisions.
A systems-focused, behavior-based approach gives managers the tools to identify root causes and drive lasting change.

The revised toolkit emphasizes meaningful coaching conversations alongside traditional investigations. It guides managers to explore the behavioral, environmental, and organizational factors that contribute to collisions, and to use those insights to strengthen both driver performance and company fleet safety policies and practices—ultimately leading to a stronger safety culture.
“This revision reflects NETS’ commitment to advancing road safety by focusing on the human factors that influence driving behavior,” said Susan Hipp, NETS’ Executive Director. “When managers understand the ‘why’ behind a collision, they can help drivers make safer choices and identify where company practices may need adjustment.”
The updated toolkit provides a behavior-based coaching framework built around three key steps: What happened, Why it happened, and What will change. It includes expanded sample scenarios for six common collision types, guidance for integrating defensive-driving principles into post-incident discussions, and templates for documenting behavioral insights and agreed-upon actions.
Developed with input from NETS Board Member companies Cintas and Chubb Insurance and with behavioral-science expertise from NETS Sponsor ABA Technologies, the new edition aligns with NETS’ mission to help employers save lives on and off the job.
